'THE LAW OF THE JUNGLE' (2019)

The Law of The Jungle’ written by Rudyard Kipling (1865 – 1936) in 1894 for his book ‘The Second Jungle Book’, first published in 1895. I chose this poem because, while ‘The Jungle Book’ is a well-known and well-loved story, Kiplings' second book is not as popular, and I thought it would be nice to focus on a small piece of the book, that really demonstrates Kipling’s exquisite writing and story-telling.

I approached the design in a contemporary style, that has a lot of fun and energy. I feel as if Kipling’s writing is not something read much amongst the younger generation, and his stories are mainly known through films, therefore I thought it would be interesting to try to approach the design in a way that would attract younger readers to his writing.

The majority of the previous editions have been printed in a very standard book page format, sometimes accompanied by a detailed illustration, most often in black and white, or very dark, muted colours. I wanted to do something the complete opposite of this. Using, bright, energy filled colours, with strong silhouette graphics, to try to capture and express the imagery of the writing and give the poem visual energy and liveliness.
